The Chicago Cubs swung a massive trade to bring Houston Astros superstar Kyle Tucker to the Windy City earlier this offseason. In the deal, the Cubs sent top prospect Cam Smith and promising infielder Isaac Paredes to Houston. Tucker only has one year remaining on his contract and he’s likely set to get paid a hefty sum of money in free agency next offseason.
Tim Britton of The Athletic recently projected Tucker would sign a massive 11-year deal worth $366 million next offseason. This is a stark difference than the seven-year, $195 million deal projected for Tucker by Spotrac. “Tucker should be able to secure a deal through at least his age-36 season, and it’s not hard for him to argue he should go longer than either Teixeira or Fielder,” Britton wrote. “Let’s go with 10 years at about $35 million each before adding in this season’s salary.”
If Tucker is going to land in the ballpark of $350 million, there are only a handful of teams that could afford him. It’s incredibly unclear whether the Cubs would be one of the teams willing to give Tucker that kind of money. Last season, the lefty got off to an incredible start that had him in the running for the American League MVP award. Unfortunately for him, injuries kept him from completing an MVP year, but that level of play is to be expected from the star.
When he lands in free agency, expect a lot of the big market teams to be interested in signing him for the next decade. Juan Soto reset the market this offseason. Tucker will look to take advantage of that in 2025 or 2026.
