The San Francisco 49ers finally added defensive line help. Sort of.
The Athletic’s Matt Barrows on Monday reported free agent defensive tackle Kevin Givens is rejoining the 49ers on a one-year deal. Givens has been with the 49ers his entire six-year career after signing as an undrafted rookie following the 2019 draft.
San Francisco needs to make a more seismic move on their defensive interior than just adding Givens, but he’s been a quality rotation piece who can start in a pinch.
One key with Givens is that he remains a rotational player on the defensive line. He’s been valuable in that role. San Francisco could run into issues if they try pushing Givens into a larger role. This is a nice signing, but the 49ers will need to supplement it with additional free agent acquisitions and heavy investment of draft capital in April.
The Givens addition is helpful, but the 49ers have also set up to release defensive tackles Maliek Collins and Javon Hargrave. There are plenty of moves left for them on the DL.
Givens in six seasons has played 65 gams with 14 starts. He posted a career-high 3.5 sacks last season, giving him 8.0 for his career to go along with 90 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, three pass breakups, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries.
