Red Sox’s Alex Cora Gives New ‘Job’ To Top Boston Prospect

The Red Sox faced a very powerful foe last week, but it wasn’t one of MLB’s other 29 teams.

A nasty illness made its way through Boston’s clubhouse in Fort Myers, Fla., and took its toll on several players. Roman Anthony was among those who caught the bug, which resulted in the highly touted Red Sox prospect losing 10-12 pounds.

Anthony rejoined Boston on Saturday, but Alex Cora informed reporters the 20-year-old wouldn’t take part in any games over the next few days. In the meantime, the Red Sox manager stressed Anthony’s job upon overcoming the illness simply was “to eat,” per The Athletic’s Jen McCaffery.

Of course, Anthony wasn’t the only Boston player hindered by illness this spring training. In addition to the other Red Sox who caught the aforementioned bug, Wilyer Abreu is dealing with a gastrointestinal issue that has his Opening Day status in doubt. Those setbacks reportedly have Craig Breslow and company looking for outfield depth as the start of the regular season nears.

And once the “real” games begin, the Red Sox surely will be hoping illnesses don’t ravage the clubhouse once again.
