The show must go on for the New York Yankees, even after another crushing injury to an already-decimated roster. Ace pitcher and 2023 AL Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole officially hit the injury report Friday with a right elbow issue. Cole told reporters Saturday morning he is “concerned” what the imaging will show.
Cole missed over two months last season with right elbow soreness. The Yankees recently also lost reigning AL Rookie of the Year Luis Gil to a high-grade right lat strain; Gil won’t throw for several weeks and is likely out until June at the earliest. “I’ve still got some hope,” Cole said Saturday, according to the Yankees’ official website. “I’m still just waiting for the experts to weigh in.”
The Yankees are also without designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton (elbows), third baseman DJ LeMahieu (calf), and reliever Scott Effross (hamstring). Left-handed reliever Tyler Matzek, who hoped to make the team as a non-roster invitee, suffered an oblique injury and hasn’t pitched since Feb. 25. Saturday, we learned two more pitchers almost certainly won’t make the Opening Day roster.
The Yankees announced they re-assigned Eric Reyzelman to minor league camp. Additionally, the club optioned ex-Chicago Cubs prospect Michael Arias to Triple-A Scranton. Reyzelman, a fifth-round pick in 2022, totaled a 10.80 ERA in four games this spring. He struck out four and only walked one in 3.1 innings. The 23-year-old Reyzelman spent most of last season at Double-A Somerset, tallying a 1.93 ERA across 23.1 innings.
Arias struck out four and allowed two runs in three innings this spring. However, he hit three of the 14 batters he faced.
