Cowboys Star-in-the-Making takes huge step towards recovery from catastrophic injury

The Dallas Cowboys found a gem in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft when they selected Texas linebacker DeMarvion Overshown at No. 90 overall. His rookie year was lost before it even got started, suffering a torn left ACL. 2024 saw Overshown explode onto the scene, proving why the club was so highly intrigued by his ceiling, as he fit seamlessly into Mike Zimmer’s defense and became a second chess piece alongside Micah Parsons, doing otherworldly physical feats.

But his second season ended prematurely, tearing multiple ligaments in his right knee in an early December contest against the Bengals. The severity and timing of this injury threatens the 24-year-old defender’s upcoming 2025 season is in jeopardy, but optimism is strong, stemming from how well he recovered after 2023’s recovery. On Wednesday, Overshown added another level of hope as he was seen walking around team headquarters without the assistance of his crutches.

Overshown had surgery on December 18 to repair the ACL, MCL, and PCL in his right knee. He gave an update to Nicole Hutchinson of DallasCowboys.com in late January revealing he was still utilizing a crutch in some capacity over a month after surgery.

Now, almost three months after injuring his right knee, the road to recovery is widening, walking on his own power. An early prognosis of his timetable was optimistically set at nine months but some have speculated the former Longhorn may miss the entire 2025 season.

“They haven’t talked timeline with me,” he said. “They know how I am, don’t tell me I’m going to miss the whole season or don’t tell me I can play at the beginning of the season. Being me, I’m going to try and get there right now. It’s kinda like last year, we get to nine-month period and see how I am.” – DeMarvion Overshown to the Dallas Morning News.

Dallas would likely have had two young surging linebackers, alongside LB Marist Liufau, this upcoming season, but the position likely needs another infusion of bodies after the devastating injury to Overshown. Although not expected to be an active participant early in the season, betting against him playing in 2025 isn’t such a sure thing.

While the road to his recovery is still in it’s infacy, teammates getting a glimpse of Overshown walking around without crutches is a step in the right direction.
