The Kansas City Chiefs are coming off a horror Super Bowl loss, and as attention turns to the offseason, Andy Reid’s team will experience a lot of player turnover. One position that is looking like it will be the hardest hit is at receiver. DeAndre Hopkins, Juju Smith-Schuster, and Marquise Brown are all free agents, and that leaves the returning Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy as the top receiver options outside of the tight ends. So how could the Chiefs solidify the room without blowing the budget? NFL.com suggests that a low-cost veteran could be the best option and mentions Keenan Allen as an option.
“The Chiefs have tried to add veterans for the last few years but wound up back in the Smith-Schuster business,” NFL.com writes. “It makes sense to retain a serviceable depth player like Watson while adding another low-cost option to the mix. A one-year pact with a ring-chasing veteran like Keenan Allen, coming off a down year, would make sense for both parties if he does not receive bigger offers.”
The problem is that Allen is likely to get a lot of offers for his services, and while 2024 was a “down” year for the six-time Pro Bowler, he still totaled 744 yards and seven touchdowns from 70 receptions. Spotrac.com values him at $11.1 million APY, and we aren’t sure Kansas City would want to stump up that sort of money.
But Patrick Mahomes’ weapons will look different next season, and the Chiefs may have to get creative if they are to surround him with enough weapons so that he doesn’t have to play hero ball.
