The New England Patriots announced Saturday that rookie quarterback Drake Maye has cleared concussion protocol.
The team has removed the ex-UNC star from the injury report for its road game against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday afternoon.
Maye, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, has completed 53-of-84 passes (63.1 percent) for 564 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions in four games (three starts). He’s also rushed for 114 yards and one score on 13 carries.
Maye suffered a head injury in the second quarter of his team’s 25-22 win over the New York Jets last Sunday after getting hit in the back of his helmet following an 18-yard run. He stayed in the game for four more plays but was then pulled for Jacoby Brissett.
Maye turned in limited practices on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday before being declared good to go for the Titans game, which presents an opportunity for the 2-6 Pats to get on a winning streak. The 1-6 Titans are stumbling as losers of three straight. Tennessee also just lost by a combined 86-24 score to the Buffalo Bills and Detroit Lions in back-to-back weeks.
Having Maye back certainly helps matters. His emergence has been a bright light in a trying season for the Pats, and he appears capable of becoming the long-term quarterback and franchise cornerstone that the team needs.
His return is ultimately a welcome sight for the Pats, who kick off against the Titans in Nashville at 1 p.m. ET Sunday.
