Yankees get grim injury news concerning reigning Rookie of the Year | Sporting News

New York Yankees pitcher Luis Gil underwent an MRI on Saturday after feeling tightness in his right shoulder during a bullpen session the day prior.

On Monday, the results of his MRI confirmed the Yankees’ fears: Gil has a high-grade lat strain that will prevent him from throwing for at least six weeks.

The injury update means that the reigning American League Rookie of the Year winner isn’t expected to return to the mound until late May or early June at the earliest, though there is no official timetable for return yet. Last season, the 26-year-old Gil registered a 15-7 record and 3.50 ERA in 29 starts, limiting opponents to an AL-best .189 batting average.

Gil’s injury history includes a Tommy John surgery that cost him most of the 2022 season. However, he appeared to turn a corner last year by racking up 151.2 innings pitched as a key member of the Yankees’ starting rotation that went deep into October.

It’s yet another blow for the Yankees, which are also dealing with injury setbacks to slugger Giancarlo Stanton and infielder DJ LeMahieu.

In the absence of Gil, the Yankees will turn to two-time All-Star Marcus Stroman to step up. The 33-year-old Stroman was an initial no-show to spring training and said he would not pitch out of the bullpen if asked. His second start of the spring on Sunday did not inspire confidence as Stroman allowed four runs on as many hits, including back-to-back home runs with two outs in the first inning.
