Braves’ spring training roster is shrinking fast after latest round of cuts

The Atlanta Braves put a thumping on Marcus Stroman and the New York Yankees this afternoon in their spring training contest. Austin Riley, Jarred Kelenic, and Matt Olson all homered as the core pieces of Atlanta’s roster seem to be heating up as spring progresses. However, not everything is great news out of Braves camp as this afternoon offered the latest round of roster cuts.

This time the players unfortunately sent to minor league camp were infielder Eddy Alvarez and RHP Chad Kuhl. These two cuts brought the total players in big league camp down to 48.

The #Braves today reassigned INF Eddy Alvarez and RHP Chad Kuhl to minor league camp. Atlanta now has 48 players in camp.

Latest round of Braves roster cuts include RHP Chad Kuhl and INF Eddy Alvarez

The decision to cut infielder Eddy Alvarez wasn’t much of a surprise as the former Marlin had an uphill battle to overtake Eli White, Nick Allen, and Luke Williams for a roster spot. However, the choice to send Kuhl down after only a few spring apperances.

While Kuhl did surrender a few baserunners and a run in his outing against Toronto yesterday, his pedigree was that of a more established pitcher than some of those remaining in camp. Kuhl pitched to the tune of a 4.10 FIP for the White Sox last season, and offered enough intrigue for the Braves to sign him to a minor league deal in early February. However, Kuhl’s rough outing yesterday clearly didn’t inspire Atlanta’s front office.

The Braves’ bullpen is without a doubt the position group with the most opportunity this spring, so Kuhl’s early departure opens the door for more of the borderline 26-man roster candidates. Over the next few weeks we’ll have to see if guys like Anderson Pilar, Buck Farmer, Dylan Covey, and Jake Diekman can take advantage and earn a place on the Opening Day roster. Because we are officially in the month of March you can expect many more of these roster cuts to happen over the next couple weeks as the Braves’ regulars begin to add to their workload.
