The San Francisco 49ers have already been involved in one big trade this offseason. Could they be involved in another?
That’s the big question surrounding quarterback Brock Purdy and his future. After sending wideout Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders on Saturday for a fifth-round pick, some are speculating that Purdy could be next.
General manager John Lynch has said they want Purdy in San Francisco for a long time, but the price tag may be too much for the team. The former Iowa State quarterback could demand upward of $50 million per season.
It’s because of that price tag that TWSN’s Marissa Myers predicts the 49ers would trade Purdy to the Tennessee Titans for the No. 1 overall pick.
“The San Francisco 49ers had choices to make regarding contracts,” wrote Myers. “Those choices included Trent Williams, Brandon Aiyuk, and Brock Purdy. They decided to extend Aiyuk on a four-year, $120 million deal, and Williams to a three-year, $82.69 extension. With limited cap space left, the decision to extend Williams over Purdy signifies that they want to keep their best offensive lineman, but also that they aren’t confident in Purdy yet to extend him. In addition, it appears as though the 49ers are looking to change their roster and get younger for the future.
“With trading Deebo Samuel, and listening to trade talks for Aiyuk, Purdy could also be included to make sure the 49ers gain enough draft capital to achieve this.”
San Francisco is in somewhat of a “win now” mode so it’s hard to imagine them having the patience to bring in a new quarterback to learn the offense. But the team would certainly rather get something in return for Purdy rather than watch him leave for nothing in free agency next offseason.
