New Washington Commanders receiver Deebo Samuel has posted his goodbye message to the San Francisco 49ers after being traded away from the team on Saturday night.
Samuel had played his entire professional career for the 49ers since being chosen in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Samuel joins a team that reached last season’s NFC Championship game with Jayden Daniels at quarterback.
Samuel made two Super Bowl appearances with the 49ers, losing both times to the Kansas City Chiefs and was beloved by the franchise’s fans.
‘Appreciate yall for everything!!!!!’ Samuel said on Instagram in a video caption that highlighted his time in the Bay Area.
The Commanders traded back a fifth-round pick to the 49ers for Samuel in the first major team swap of the NFL offseason.
Samuel will be inserted as the No 2 receiver on the Commanders behind Terry McLaurin.
The trade should benefit both teams as Daniels now has a legitimate outside weapon besides McLaurin that can beat teams all over the field.
Samuel’s versatility as a wide receiver should also take some pressure off of Daniels and the run game, as he is a good blocker and can be used for run plays.
The 49ers wide receiver room was crowded, with Samuel appearing to be the cost-effective move to make everyone else happy.
San Francisco’s top receiver, Brandon Aiyuk, was previously linked with a move to the Commanders last offseason before he signed a new long-term contract with the 49ers.
Expect both teams to stay aggressive in the offseason as Washington looks to maintain its position as one of the best teams in the NFC and San Francisco looks to get back to that standing.
