Cowboys free agent pitch lands Steelers $27M playmaker to boost offense | Sporting News

In 2024, the Dallas Cowboys had one of the league’s worst rushing attacks. The team finished with 1,705 rushing yards, which ranked 27th in the league. The Cowboys also had just six rushing scores, which was the least amount of any team.

Now, the team will enter free agency with a clear chance to upgrade at the position. This free-agent class includes notable names like Najee Harris, Aaron Jones, and Nick Chubb, among others. The Cowboys’ own Rico Dowdle is also heading for free agency, but the team could prefer to start fresh at the position.

Patrick K. Flowers of Bleacher Nation recently identified five free agents who should interest the Cowboys this offseason. Harris was included in Flowers’ list as a player who could instantly help the team in 2025.

Regarding Harris and the Cowboys, Flowers offered the following:

Dallas will likely be in the market for a running back, and Najee Harris is probably the best long-term solution for the position in this free-agency class. Harris will be 27 next season and is coming off of a solid four-season run in Pittsburgh in which he rushed for 4,316 yards (fifth most during that time) and is excellent after contact, racking up 3,203 yards after contact (fourth most during that time). If Dallas prefers a shorter-term, cheaper addition at running back, Nick Chubb and J.K. Dobbins will also be available.

In 2024, Harris rushed for 1,043 yards and six touchdowns. The Alabama product also caught 36 passes for 283 yards. Harris has been remarkably consistent since entering the league in 2021. The running back has accumulated 1,000+ yards in each of his pro seasons and earned a Pro Bowl bid as a rookie.

While Harris’ numbers are impressive, the running back has never fully lived up to his billing. Harris’ yardage totals are more a product of his heavy usage over the last three seasons than anything else. The running back has rushed at least 255 times in each of his seasons but averages just under 4.0 yards per carry overall.

Still, Harris has shown to be a reliable workhorse who would provide a solid floor for the Cowboys’ ground game. Harris would also help Dak Prescott out by being an extra weapon in the passing game.

Spotrac projects Harris to land a three-year deal worth just over $9 million annually. Over the Cap projects the Cowboys to have around $4 million in cap space, so some moves would need to be made to land a player like Harris.

Restructuring Dak Prescott, extending Micah Parsons, and cutting Terrence Steele are all moves the Cowboys could consider making to create more cap space this offseason.
