What Red Sox Pitching Staff Could Look Like After Spring Training Injuries

The Boston Red Sox made elevating the potential of the starting rotation and improving the overall depth of the pitching staff a priority this offseason.

Having those extra arms will pay off, and may do so earlier than expected.

Alex Cora told reporters that Kutter Crawford could miss time with a knee injury while Brayan Bello paused his throwing progression at spring training due to shoulder soreness. Boston’s manager didn’t seem as worried about Bello’s stoppage, but regardless the Red Sox have arms to monitor in the early days of Grapefruit League play.

Bullpen candidate Zack Penrod could also miss significant time, adding more decisions for Cora, pitching coach Andrew Bailey and the Red Sox front office to make.

The Red Sox have proper, talented depth to fill in the spots on the staff, which could look like this if the previously mentioned pitchers need more time beyond Opening Day.

Rotation:
SP Garrett Crochet
SP Tanner Houck
SP Lucas Giolito
SP Walker Buehler
SP Brayan Bello

If Bello’s shoulder soreness keeps his program behind past Opening Day, the Red Sox have three capable spot-starters in Triple-A Worcester with Richard Fitts, Quinn Priester and Hunter Dobbins ready to roll when needed.

Bullpen:
RHP Garrett Whitlock
RHP Luis Guerrero
LHP Justin Wilson
RHP Adam Ottavino
LHP Brennan Bernardino
LHP Aroldis Chapman
RHP Justin Slaten
RHP Liam Hendriks (Closer)

Alex Cora hinted at still wanting some more left-handed relief help even after the additions of Aroldis Chapman and Justin Wilson this winter. For now, we’ll leave that spot to Brennan Bernardino. Boston since connected on a reunion with Adam Ottavino, so his veteran presence could earn him the final spot for now in the bullpen.

It’s early in spring training. All three injuries could be resolved when the Red Sox kick off the season in Texas against the Rangers on March 27. If not, that roster outlook could shape the pitching staff to begin the season.
