Abreu reported to camp with an illness and received lab results that revealed what the Gold Glove outfielder dealt with.
“Wilyer came to camp with a gastrointestinal illness,” a Red Sox spokesperson said Saturday, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive. “It’s viral and he wasn’t feeling well with some abnormal labs. Labs have been getting better, and he’s feeling better, but they’re waiting for those to get back to a normal range before baseball activity.”
Abreu did not swing a bat or participate in fielding drills since he felt ill. He returned to the Fenway South complex early last week. Abreu spoke to NESN’s Tom Caron and Lou Merloni on the “310 To Left” podcast, so that’s likely a positive sign about his health. However, Boston will take its time with the 25-year-old.
“The labs came in Friday,” Cora told reporters, per Cotillo. “There’s still something there. He’ll get another lab on Monday and we’ll see where we’re at. Until we get the clearance from the doctors, we’ll stay away from him.”

Opening Day is March 27, so Abreu still has time to get back into baseball shape. The news of the outfielder’s GI diagnosis came after Cora revealed there was a setback with Kutter Crawford.
