The Boston Red Sox’ signing of Alex Bregman has put them in a tough situation they were not anticipating. Alex Bregman was signed to be the third baseman, but Rafael Devers was not too keen on changing positions when approached by the team and media, according to ESPN. “Third base is my position,” Devers told reporters through an interpreter. “It’s what I play. I don’t know what their plans are. We had a conversation. I made it clear on what my desires were. Whatever happens from here, I don’t know.”
The topic has sparked some controversy in the clubhouse as well. Triston Casas spoke in defense of Devers when he spoke to the media. The simple solution would be to trade Devers and ensure Bregman stays as the third baseman. However, Bregman could opt out after the season, leaving a hole in the hot corner. Additionally, Devers may not be easy to trade with his 10-year, $313 million deal.
However, Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer proposed this blockbuster deal that could send Devers to the Chicago Cubs while bringing a slugger to Boston: Red Sox receive: right fielder/designated hitter Seiya Suzuki and catcher Moises Ballesteros (Cubs No.4 prospect) Cubs receive: third baseman Rafael Devers Devers did not shoot down the idea of being traded when asked by MassLive’s Chris Cotillo.
“That’s a tough answer to give. I haven’t given it much thought,” Devers told Cotillo. “I’ve been here my entire career. I haven’t asked myself that question. I’m open to listening. I’m not close to those conversations.” Suzuki is not too pleased with the idea of being a designated hitter in Chicago, according to his agent Joel Wolfe. With Ian Happ, Kyle Tucker and Pete Crow-Armstrong, the Cubs may have to deal with Suzuki’s displeasure of being a DH by trading him.
Suzuki signed a five-year, $85 million deal with the Cubs in 2022. On the Red Sox, he could see more time in the outfield and save the Red Sox some money as well. “Though Boston has a Gold Glover in right field in the form of Abreu, he’s so dismal against lefties that the team could surely promise time in the field to Suzuki,” wrote Rymer. “Plus, the dude’s just a good hitter in general. Suzuki is coming off a career-best .848 OPS and there’s a ton of red on his Statcast profile. Ballesteros, meanwhile, could be the catcher-of-the-future that the Red Sox gave up when they traded Kyle Teel in the Garrett Crochet deal.”
Trading Devers would not be easy, especially given his situation. However, if the Red Sox do find a suitor for him, getting a player like Suzuki would be a decent return.
