With Spring Training just getting underway, Atlanta Braves catching prospect Drake Baldwin is already generating plenty of buzz. The young backstop has been one of the most talked-about players in the Braves’ farm system, and his performance in early workouts is only adding to the excitement. Baldwin, who has been climbing prospect rankings all offseason, arrived in North Port with high expectations. Reporters and scouts alike have taken notice of his smooth swing and impressive power to all fields. The Athletic’s David O’Brien recently praised Baldwin’s approach at the plate, calling his opposite-field power “big-time.”
Though Baldwin is currently a non-roster invitee in camp, his strong track record suggests he won’t be in that category for long. Last season, he made a name for himself by excelling at Triple-A Gwinnett, where he batted .298 with an .891 OPS, 12 home runs, and 55 RBIs in just 72 games. His plate discipline was another standout trait, as he maintained a .407 on-base percentage and nearly matched his walk total (52) with strikeouts (54).
His breakout performance earned him the honor of Braves Minor League Player of the Year by Baseball America, solidifying his status as one of the organization’s brightest young stars. He also showcased his talents in the Arizona Fall League, where he continued to hit for average (.377) while maintaining a low strikeout rate (14.5%).
Although he isn’t yet on Atlanta’s 40-man roster, Baldwin’s trajectory suggests that it won’t be long before he forces his way into the big-league conversation. As Spring Training games approach, he’ll have a chance to further prove himself and potentially earn a call-up sooner rather than later.
