The Dallas Cowboys will need to erase their salary cap deficit if they want to be active in free agency. If they can do that, they may target a starter from the Philadelphia Eagles.
Mekhi Becton is a free agent after just one season with the Eagles. After 15 starts and a Super Bowl run, he could earn a decent contract on the open market. Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox noted the Cowboys as a potential fit for Becton.
“The Cowboys should also consider Becton—if they can erase their projected $5.7 million cap deficit—as a potential replacement for Zack Martin,” wrote Knox.
Becton is projected to earn a four-year, $40 million deal in free agency following his 2024 season. Becton was the 11th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the New York Jets, but early struggles and injuries delayed his breakout. The Cowboys saw what could happen if they lost Prescott to injury and protecting him should be a priority this offseason.
Additionally, Becton was part of an offensive line that helped Saquon Barkley win Offensive Player of the Year. Bringing him to the Cowboys would tremendously improve their ability to run the football. Last season, they had the sixth-fewest yards on the ground. The Cowboys are currently $4.58 million over the cap for 2025 according to Over the Cap. Becton will be one of the cheaper linemen available, but the Cowboys still need to find the money to make it happen.
