Cardinals Hopeful They Can Smooth Any Hard Feelings With Nolan Arenado

His preferred list of teams to which to be traded exhausted, Nolan Arenado remains a member of the St. Louis Cardinals with their first full-squad spring training workout scheduled for Monday in Jupiter, Fla.

Arenado asked at the end of last season to be traded when the Cardinals missed the postseason for the second straight year. The Cardinals are retrenching in president of baseball operations John Mozeliak’s final season on the job before handing off to former Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom and did not sign any free agents to major-league contract this winter after going 83-79.

Now 33 years old and entering his 13th season, Arenado has no patience for playing on a team that doesn’t appear to have a chance to win this season. He is a 10-time Gold Glove winner, eight-time All-Star and five-time Silver Slugger recipient but he has never been past the divisional series round in five postseason appearances with the Colorado Rockies and Cardinals, his teams compiling an aggregate 1-7 record.

Arenado is likely to be inducted into the Hall of Fame someday. However, he wants a World Series ring and no longer sees a path to that with the Cardinals.

So, it could be a little awkward when Arenado arrives for that first workout. Or it could be a lot awkward. And the awkwardness might linger if the Cardinals are unable to trade him before the regular season begins March 27.

Mozeliak has not spoken to Arenado directly in three months but has been in touch with his agents at Wasserman. Mozeliak believes a truce can be had with Arenado after the two have been together four seasons with the Cardinals.

“I think it will be a little less awkward than I thought,” Mozeliak said. “He knows that we tried (to trade him). He knows we had a deal that he didn’t accept. I’m not bitter. I don’t think he’ll be bitter. I think from a team standpoint, as a group, we can make this work.”

The Cardinals and Arenado may have no choice. Mozeliak had a deal in place with the Houston Astros in November, but Arenado rejected it by invoking the no-trade clause in his contract.

Arenado has five teams he would be willing to play for: the Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies and San Diego Padres.

Any chance of doing something with the Red Sox ended last week when they signed third baseman Alex Bregman to a three-year, $140-million contract in free agency. The Dodgers and Cardinals engaged in trade talks over the winter but couldn’t find common ground. The Mets, Phillies and Padres already have third basemen and aren’t inclined to add to their payrolls.

There are three years and $74 million left on the nine-year, $275-million contract Arenado signed with the Rockies.

He is scheduled to have salaries of $32 million this season, $27 million next year and $15 million in 2027. Of those salaries, $6 million each in 2025 and 2026 is to be deferred with no interest, payable from 2032-41.

The Rockies are paying $5 million of Arenado’s salary this year. That is the final payment of the $51 million the Rockies agreed to send the Cardinals to offset the $199 million remaining in an agreement worth $275 million over nine years when the teams made a trade on Feb. 1, 2021.

The Cardinals will almost certainly need to pick up some of the remaining money to facilitate a trade.

While the trade possibilities have seemingly dried up, Mozeliak will continue to look for a partner. He also knows Arenado might need to be open-minded to other teams if he wants to leave St. Louis.

Further hurting the market for Arenado is that he is coming off his worst full season since his rookie year in 2013. He hit .272/.335/.394 with 16 home runs in 152 games.

In a perfect world without a trade, Arenado will still find some happiness and return to his All-Star form and make the Cardinals a factor in a less-than-overwhelming National League Central.

“He does make us a better team, if he’s Nolan, if he’s happy,” Mozeliak said. “If the club’s doing really well, maybe he finds happiness here. Maybe he doesn’t. I don’t think either of us can speak to that until we really know. We approached the offseason with a plan to do something with him. We tried.

Mozeliak then paused.

“Here we are,” he said.
