Cowboys could steal ‘sack artist’ from Commanders in free agency | Sporting News

The Dallas Cowboys’ defense could look very different after free agency. They will have some key players hitting free agency and may look to replace them with cheap options.

The Cowboys could be losing DeMarcus Lawrence this offseason and will need to find an upgrade in either free agency or the draft. Dante Fowler Jr. of the Washington Commanders will be a free agent and could come back to the Cowboys. Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox named the Cowboys as a potential landing spot.

“Just about any NFL team could use additional pass-rushing help. Getting a potent sack artist at a bargain would be a bonus,” wrote Knox. “That’s what the Washington Commanders got when they signed Dante Fowler Jr. to a one-year, $3.3 million deal last offseason. Fowler appeared in all 17 games for the Commanders, logged 10.5 sacks and 20 quarterback pressures and helped Washington reach the NFC Championship Game.”

Fowler is projected to earn a three-year, $15 million deal in free agency. He would be a relatively cheap addition as the Cowboys try to stay under the cap. He played two seasons with the Cowboys but is coming off a very productive year in Washington.

“A return to Dallas, where Fowler played in 2022 and 2023, would make plenty of sense,” wrote Knox. “The Cowboys may part with DeMarcus Lawrence in free agency and are projected to be $5.7 million over the salary cap.”
