If the Chicago Cubs are going to make a splash during the next month, it could come in a few different ways. Over the past few months, the front office has suggested that they’re interested in adding a starting pitcher, but if a superstar hitter becomes available, going after said player wouldn’t be a bad decision.
The Cubs have already made a massive move this winter by trading for Kyle Tucker, arguably one of the best five hitters in Major League Baseball. However, a season ago, the Cubs offense ranked in the bottom half in nearly every major hitting statistic, a potential issue for a team looking to improve in 2025.
Despite how elite the Cubs’ pitching staff looks on paper, if they can’t swing the bats with the best of them, they shouldn’t expect much to change in 2025. That’s where somebody like Vladimir Guerrero Jr. could come into play. The Toronto Blue Jays haven’t shown the willingness to move him just yet, but in a recent prediction from MLB insiders of The Athletic, he was voted one of the more likely players to be traded during spring training.
If the Blue Jays become open for business, trading for the right-handed slugger would put the Cubs over the top. One could even make an argument at that point that they’d be the clear favorites in the National League Central, which some already believe.
The Dominican Republic native has done nothing but swing the bat at an elite level throughout his career, evident by his 30 home runs and .940 OPS showing in 2024.
