Cowboys 1,300-yard playmaker could ditch Dallas to join Steelers | Sporting News

The Dallas Cowboys rushing attack was subpar last season but could be losing its only real bright spot. With not many running backs available in free agency, a Cowboys starter could earn a nice payday elsewhere.

The Cowboys had the sixth-least rushing yards in the league last season and were tied for the least 20-plus yard runs. The team’s leading rusher was Rico Dowdle who had 1,079 rushing yards and over 1,300 total tards. The Cowboys will likely overhaul their running back room, meaning Dowdle could sign a new deal with a new team. Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox named the Pittsburgh Steelers as a potential landing spot.

“With Najee Harris set to become a free agent, the Pittsburgh Steelers should view Dowdle as a budget alternative,” wrote Knox. “Harris split time with Jaylen Warren over the past two years and has a projected market value of $9.2 million annually.”

Dowdle was one of the bright spots for the Cowboys despite a flurry of injuries. At times, without Dak Prescott, teams were able to key in on Dowdle, knowing the Cowboys’ passing attack was limited. Even so, Dowdle has 1,000 yards on the ground.

The Cowboys will have options in the NFL Draft to find a new, explosive running back. Ashton Jeanty will likely be a name linked to the Cowboys in mock drafts. However, Dowdle could find success with a new team in need of a rusher.
