Amid Aaron Rodgers not returning to the New York Jets, this could benefit the New England Patriots in more ways than one. On Thursday, the Jets announced they are moving forward without Rodgers, which means the Patriots could have one less high-level quarterback to tangle with in the AFC East.
In addition, Rodgers’ longtime teammate and star wide receiver Davante Adams will “likely” look for another landing spot instead of staying with the Jets, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. Rapoport’s report came out Sunday before the Jets’ Rodgers announcement. As Rapoport noted, the Jets would have a $38.3 million cap hit to deal with if Adams stays, or the team would have to rework a deal.
It might not be likely, as the six-time Pro Bowl selection reportedly wants to play on the West Coast and could also look into the possibility of staying alongside Rodgers if the 41-year-old continues playing. “Without even looking too far ahead, those developments were good news for the Patriots,” NESN’s Adam London wrote.
“But Rapoport’s findings could become even more beneficial to New England if Adams opens himself up to a true free agency.” “It might not be likely, as the six-time Pro Bowl selection reportedly wants to play on the West Coast and also could look into the possibility of staying alongside Rodgers if the 41-year-old keeps playing,” London continued. “But if Adams employs a more open-minded approach to his next destination, maybe the Patriots would look into potentially bringing him aboard.” New England could use the pass-catching talent for second-year quarterback Drake Maye, and the Patriots have plenty of salary-cap space to afford Adams.
