Since taking over as the head coach for the North Carolina Tar Heels earlier this offseason, Bill Belichick has been getting settled and making the program his own. From working to instill a culture to bringing in talented players to play for him, the former New England Patriots coach has done a good job of leading the Tar Heels into a new era.
On Wednesday, Belichick seemingly dug into his past to try and spur on that new era, offering a scholarship to the son of one of his legendary former players with the Patriots. The offer went to LeGarrette Blount Jr., the son of three-time Super Bowl-winning running back LeGarrette Blount. LeGarrette Blount Blount Jr. is a wide receiver and defensive back in the class of 2028, meaning he is currently a freshman at Hamilton High School in Chandler, Arizona.
He does not yet have a profile on any of the major recruiting services, but according to his social media profile, he stands at 5-foot-11, 160 pounds. Blount Sr. was certainly excited about the news of the offer when it was made public.
Blount Sr. won a pair of Super Bowls with the Patriots in 2014 and 2017 under Belichick and alongside quarterback Tom Brady. He then joined the Philadelphia Eagles and beat New England in Super Bowl LII the following year. Before his NFL career began, Blount was a polarizing player at the college level as a member of the Oregon Ducks.
He was a prolific runner, but ran into trouble on the field with the “punch hear around the world” against the Boise State Broncos at the beginning of his senior season in Eugene. After an on-field confrontation after the Broncos win over Oregon, Blount punched Boise State defender Byron Hout in the face, knocking him to the ground. Despite the drama, Blount went on to have an incredibly successful NFL career, and he is now hoping that his son can achieve the same success going forward.
