The Kansas City Chiefs fell to the Philadelphia Eagles in a blowout loss in Super Bowl LIX on Sunday night, and it sounds like quarterback Patrick Mahomes is willing to take the blame.
During the game, Patrick Mahomes threw a couple of first-half interceptions, including a pick-six to Eagles rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean. The other interception gave the Eagles the ball at the 14-yard line and scored a touchdown shortly after.
The two interceptions allowed the Eagles to take a 24-0 lead into the half, which proved to be insurmountable.
“Obviously the turnovers hurt, I take all the blame for that,” Mahomes said according to Pro Football Talk. “Those early turnovers swing the momentum of the game and they capitalized on them. They scored on one and they got a touchdown immediately after, so that’s 14 points I kinda gave them. It’s hard to come back from that in a Super Bowl. Just didn’t play up to my standard and I have to play better next time.”
Mahomes gave DeJean praise for his interception, saying “the kid made a great play.” During the second interception, Mahomes said he “got bumped a little bit” in the pocket, but he admitted that he has to “find a way to make the throw.”
As the Chiefs were trying desperately to claw back into the game in the second half, Mahomes also fumbled the ball while taking a hit, giving the Eagles the ball deep in Chiefs territory yet again.
There’s no telling what would have happened if Mahomes had been able to avoid those turnovers, but he seems to think they played a big role in the loss.
We’ll have to see how Mahomes and the Chiefs bounce back next season.
