An offense that produced top-five quality throughout 2024 is back to do even more damage this season. The Philadelphia Phillies catapulted themselves into championship contention with a demonstration of elite offensive power and a pitching staff that can shut the lights off any given night. They fell short of the ultimate goal ultimately, but a new year presents optimism that the club can bounce back bigger than ever.
The Phillies got contributions from many different places throughout the roster with veteran leadership holding strong. The future still looks bright, but not without some doubt and that includes third baseman Alec Bohm and outfielder Nick Castellanos, at least from a dynasty fantasy baseball perspective.
Alec Bohm, Nick Castellanos being faded by dynasty fantasy baseball experts
The Bohm and Castellanos duo has been together in the Phillies lineup since Castellanos arrived in 2022. Most of the time, they bat one after the other with Bohm getting a majority of the time in the clean-up spot. For Bohm, his future is uncertain after a breakout All-Star 2024 season.
Dynasty owners in fantasy are looking to make their picks and Bohm’s outlook isn’t a given. According to Geoff Pontes and Dylan White of Baseball America, Bohm’s recent success won’t be enough to sway fantasy owners (subscription required).
“His underwhelming power production has me looking at other options at first and third base,” Pontes writes. “While Bohm is a solid floor player, he fits into a profile that has a capped ceiling. He’s a corner infielder that contributes in batting average and RBIs—and nothing else.”
Castellanos is getting the same treatment, as he hasn’t truly lived up to the $100 million contract Philadelphia gave him. He has had his moments, but on a grander scale, has left much to be desired.
“For the second straight year, Castellanos hit 23 or more home runs with 166 or more runs plus RBIs for a first division team,” White writes. “The bad news is that, heading into his age-33 season, he has had three straight seasons—and essentially full seasons at that—never having accrued more than 1.5 fWAR in any one campaign.”
Both Castellanos and Bohm have their uncertainties coming into the year. Bohm took five seasons before breaking through and has yet to channel the home run power that we hoped would come along as he aged. Castellanos remains one of the worst defenders in baseball but mans right field due to another bad defender, Kyle Schwarber, in the DH spot. He also struggled against right-handed pitching, per Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia. If you’re looking to build a long-term fantasy roster with these guys right now, you’re taking a chance.
The caveat is that Bohm could hit another gear in 2025 and produce like a top third baseman in the game next year. Castellanos led all of baseball in walk-off wins with five last year and always seems to find the big moment. These guys may not be your first option, but you can buy low, and given the team they’re on, they could turn into real gems in 2025.
