Former Green Bay Packers Quarterback Aaron Rodgers Will Need A New Team In 2025

When the Green Bay Packers finished the 2022 NFL season 8-9 and missed the postseason, they made the tough and unpopular decision to part ways with future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers. By doing so, they paved the way for Jordan Love to take over under center, a decision that has resulted in two consecutive appearances in the NFL Playoffs.

As a result of their decision to go forward with the changing of the guard at the quarterback position, Green Bay traded Rodgers to the New York Jets for a first round pick swap, 2023 second round pick, and a 2024 conditional pick.

While the Packers were happy with their return and their plan with Love going forward, the Jets believed that they were getting the missing piece of the puzzle that would lead them back to the postseason for the first time in over a decade.

Unfortunately for Rodgers and the Jets, none of what they envisioned happening after the trade came to pass. The future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback tore his Achilles four snaps into Week One of the 2023 NFL season and missed the remainder of the year.

Without him, New York finished 7-10 for the second season in a row, but were filled with hope that a healthy Rodgers and a revamped roster would finally break their postseason drought.

Instead, the Jets (and Rodgers) regressed even more in 2024. On their path to a 5-12 finish, the fired head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas. Throughout the season, there were multiple reports of discontent among the players, and some appeared frustrated with Rodgers himself.

Of course, New York has a new head coach (Aaron Glenn) and general manager (Darren Mougey) now, and they do not seem keen on having the 41-year-old quarterback return next season.

As has been the case for the last few years, Rodgers is not certain whether or not he wants to play again next year. If he does, however, it will not be for the Jets. Per Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer, Glenn and Mougey have informed him that they do not want him back next year:

Big scoopage: Aaron Rodgers flew back to New Jersey last week to meet with the Jets about his future with the team, only to be told that the team was moving on from him. If that means that he will be a June 1 designation that allows him to sign with any team in the league on…

“Aaron Rodgers flew back to New Jersey last week to meet with the Jets about his future with the team, only to be told that the team was moving on from him. If that means that he will be a June 1 designation that allows him to sign with any team in the league on March 12 if he decides to continue to play. Given that Aaron made the effort to fly back to discuss his future, all signs point to him continuing to play. It just won’t be for the Jets.”

Given the fact that Rodgers was willing to fly to New Jersey for a meeting about his future, signs point to him wanting to play again next season. Where that will be, and if that remains the case, is yet to be seen.
