Something has to change if the Dallas Cowboys want to save their season as they sit at 3-4 without much of anything going well for them.
In fact, there’s a lot that has a to change if they’re to bounce back and fight for a spot in the playoffs. The Cowboys aren’t doing too hot neither offensively nor defensively. Heck, even on special teams, they can’t seem to get through a kickoff without committing a foul.
However, it’s going to be highly difficult for the Cowboys to change much. The roster has too many holes and it’ll take of a lot of players simply… playing better to turn this thing around.

With that being said, one of the potential changes we could see is the benching of starting safety Donovan Wilson. It’d be a major move considering Wilson takes the fifth-most cap space on the Cowboys roster this season at $7.3 million but last Sunday’s loss to the San Francisco 49ers might’ve set the table for the inevitable move.
Mike Zimmer’s plan to stop George Kittle was to task Wilson with slowing down the two-time First-Team All-Pro in man coverage. That plan didn’t work out, as he allowed four of Kittle’s six catches in the game while individually giving up 102 yards and a touchdown. The other three catches moved the chains for San Francisco.
Late in the game, Zimmer tasked others such as Jourdan Lewis, Israel Mukuamu, and Trevon Diggs to deal with Kittle. Considering Wilson has never been excellent in coverage but rather working underneath as an enforcer that knows how to lay down the boom, it might become a matter of what does Zimmer want out of his safeties.
Changing his assignment late in the game last weekend makes it likely that a change will occur.
This opens the door for Juanyeh Thomas or even Markquese Bell to get some playing time. Perhaps even Mukuamu, who is somewhat of a nickelback for the Cowboys as of right now.
But so far, Wilson has been a problem in 2024. That extends beyond coverage, as he’s been caught in the wrong gap or missing assignments almost on a weekly basis.
Safety is one of the few positions where the Cowboys have the luxury to try something else, as both Thomas and Bell have shown some flashes that could earn them more reps. Bell was basically a starter for the team in 2023, albeit in a modified role as a linebacker.
He still excelled in coverage, though. As for Thomas, he’s consistently stood out in preseason and training camp.
On Sunday, Wilson’s playing time will have to be closely monitored.
