Back in what seems like a very long time ago, the Chicago Cubs saw the benefits of having Anthony Rizzo on their roster.
Rizzo was one of the better players in Major League Baseball during his time with the Cubs, helping the team complete history by winning a World Series in 2016.
Fast forward to 2025, and Chicago and Rizzo are in completely different positions than nearly a decade ago. Rizzo isn’t the same player he once was, coming off the worst campaign of his career with the New York Yankees in 2024, and the Cubs are trying to get back to what they once were.
The signs are positive for Chicago right now, but until the roster proves there’s enough talent in the clubhouse to win a World Series, there will be question marks.
Regarding Rizzo, he remains on the market.
While there might not be many teams interested in adding a 35-year-old coming off an 81 OPS+ showing, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic shared a positive update on his free agency.
“A number of free-agent hitters are on hold while waiting for Alonso and Bregman to make their decisions. Among them: Justin Turner, Yoan Moncada, Randal Grichuk and Ty France. The available hitters also include Harrison Bader, Mark Canha, David Peralta, Tommy Pham and Anthony Rizzo,” Rosenthal wrote.
If Rizzo’s free agency isn’t where he wants it to be due to other players being available, it could be a matter of days before he finds a new deal. At the very least, there seems to be some interest from teams.
Alex Bregman and Pete Alonso should find their new homes before or during the beginning of Spring training, and guys like Rizzo will likely follow that.
