BREAKING NEWS: Mets Show Interest in Rays First Baseman

The New York Mets rumors continue as Pat Ragazzo has reported that the Mets are interested in Tampa Bay Rays infielder Yandy Diaz. Diaz is a first baseman but also plays third base. The Cuban-born player has also played for the Cleveland Indians. While the Mets have agreed to a deal with infielder Nick Madrigal he will be utilized as a bench bat for the Mets while also providing depth.

The Mets have options for first base with Mark Vientos, Brett Baty, and plenty of prospects they could turn to. But Diaz would provide veteran experience who has been in the big leagues for eight seasons. Diaz was also an All-Star for the Rays in 2023 while winning the American League Silver Slugger Award for first base. While the Mets are still pushing to resign Pete Alonso, Diaz is a suitable option to explore. He also resembles similar characteristics to Alonso.

Comparing Diaz to Alonso

Even though Diaz’s numbers were down last season, he still had stood out offensively. This makes him a suitable candidate for the Mets. According to Baseball Savant, Diaz had an impressive 2024 season with a solid average exit velocity of 92.2, a hard-hit rate of 48.7 %, a squared-up rate of 31.9 %, a chase of 22.8 %, a whiff rate of 14.2 %, a strikeout rate of 15.3 %. The 33-year-old also sported a solid batting average of .281, 14 home runs, 158 hits, and 65 RBIs. Diaz’s career wRC+ is reminiscent of Alonso (130 vs. 131).

Looking at the past three seasons with both players, Diaz has sported a 143 wRC+ compared to Alonso’s 128 wRC+. In addition, Alonso played his best baseball when he established himself in the big leagues. But with Diaz, he has refined himself over the years. Diaz is a player that has been overlooked and underrated in terms of his hitting. In addition to his solid bat speed and caliber exit velocity, he has showcased excellent plate discipline. Even with 2024 being a down year for Diaz, he could still record a 120 wRC+, which was quite similar to Alonso’s wRC+ of 121.
