Earlier this week, the Chicago Cubs swung a second blockbuster trade with the Houston Astros, acquiring closer Ryan Pressly after bringing in Kyle Tucker earlier this winter. Pressly is a very welcomed addition to a Cubs bullpen that seemed very shaky at the end of games in 2024. Now, Chicago could dive into the free agency market to bring in another high-leverage arm or two to complement Pressly. FanSided’s Michael Brakebill recently predicted the Cubs would land 39-year-old veteran David Robertson in free agency. Robertson is projected to sign for $7 million, per Spotrac.
“My favorite name on this list is David Robertson. Another former Cub who put up good numbers in a Cubs uniform, Robertson, recorded a 2.23 ERA with 14 saves in 2022,” Brakebill wrote. “Since then, between 2023 and 2024, he has recorded a 3.01 ERA in 137.1 frames. Although Robertson is entering his age-40 season, he still appears to have plenty in the tank and will have no problem finding a contract with a big-league club this winter. “Considering the Cubs still have $13 million before hitting that $220 million cap for the offseason, Robertson’s price range likely falls in perfectly for the Cubs financially.”
If the Cubs are looking for a very reliable veteran who’s showcased the ability to win, Robertson is their guy. The veteran has posted ERA+s of 132, 145, and 173 over the last three seasons, respectively.
He still has a lot of gas left in the tank and the Cubs could likely bring him back to the Windy City for less than $10 million.
