Red Sox Given Unique Distinction As Free Agency Hits Next Wave

The Red Sox have plenty of needs to fill, but one of them seems to have slipped under the radar.

Carlos Narváez, Blake Sabol, Seby Zavala and Mark Kolozsvary will all enter spring training with an opportunity to win the backup catching job behind Connor Wong, though none of them are going to knock your socks off. Wong, Narváez and Sabol are the only two currently on the active roster, so there’s a decent chance that some depth will be added over the coming weeks.

ESPN cycled through some of those options Tuesday, and came to an interesting conclusion.

Boston — along with the San Diego Padres, Miami Marlins, Philadelphia Phillies and Cleveland Guardians — were collectively viewed as the best fits for several free-agent catchers. Elías Díaz, Yasmani Grandal and James McCann were listed as potential veteran depth options in the story.

McCann has already been linked to the Red Sox, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive.

Grandal and Diaz have not been, but the former could be an option considering his experience and ability to hit from the left side. Boston could also just be happy with the current options in its system, but adding a left-handed option at some point certainly wouldn’t hurt.
