A year after Jerry Jones claimed he’d be “all-in” on the Dallas Cowboys, the owner chose to give up on the team for a few years as it heads through a bizarre rebuild with a new head coach.
Jones waited until moments before the start of the 2024 regular season to extend quarterback Dak Prescott to a new contract extension. The delay ruined the Cowboys’ opportunity to add meaningful free agents in the offseason. It also meant Dallas is set to pay Prescott $60 million per year on a maximized roster.
The Cowboys are stuck in mediocrity.
Following a 5-12 season, Jones chose not to bring back (pay) Mike McCarthy to oversee a multi-year tank job.
The Dallas Cowboys hired Brian Schottenheimer
Per the Cowboys’ website, Jones promoted Brian Schottenheimer from offensive coordinator to head coach on Friday.
“Brian Schottenheimer is all set to officially become the 10th head coach in the history of the Dallas Cowboys, the two sides agreeing to terms on Friday evening after two extensive interviews earlier in the week,” per the Cowboys. “The team will hold a press conference Monday, Jan. 27 at 11 a.m. CT to formally announce the decision.”
At 51, Schottenheimer has no head coaching experience. He doesn’t have good offensive coordinator experience. McCarthy wouldn’t let the son of Marty Schottenheimer call plays for Dallas in the last two seasons.
Future Houston Texans fans do not like the hire
Cowboys fans on social media have been frustrated with reports that Jones was seriously considering hiring Schottenheimer. They’re about ready to be done with Dallas after the team confirmed they were hiring the former backup quarterback to Danny Wuerffel at Florida.
“Here is to more years of losing !! This is getting depressing,” wrote a fan.
“Despicable decision! Boycotting this organization! After 40 years!,” posted another.
“This is the moment I might quit the fanbase,” commented a fan.
“I said the same thing- 37 yrs f conscientious cheering, 2nd generation fan and I think I’m done- at least till they sell or they hire a real GM,” suggested another.
“That’s it I can’t support this team until Jerry’s out,” replied a frustrated fan.
“I give up being a Cowboys fan,” wrote another.
