Patrick Mahomes Gets Devastating Personal News Before AFC Championship Game

Just days before the biggest game of the season, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes received some pretty gut-wrenching news about a member of his family. Mahomes and the Chiefs host the Buffalo Bills on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium in a rematch of their Week 11 meeting – a 30-21 Bills’ win in which Mahomes threw two interceptions and as limited to just 196 yards passing.

The good news for Chiefs fans is despite the team’s 1-4 record against Josh Allen and the Bills in the regular season, they’re 3-0 against them in the playoffs, including last year’s 27-24 victory in the AFC divisional round and a 38-24 win in the 2020 AFC Championship Game. And while there’s plenty of buzz for Sunday’s game, Mahomes will likely be playing with a heavy heart as it was revealed by his mom Randi that the star QB’s grandfather was moved to hospice care on Friday. “My dad is in a hospice and I’m lost for words,” Randi posted on her Instagram story.

Randi has been fairly vocal on her social media pages about her dad’s declining health, though she’s never outright stated what illness he’s been battling. She asked for prayers for her father back in September after he was admitted to the hospital, though he was released by Thanksgiving when she shared of photo of the two celebrating the holidays together.

The news comes just a few days after the birth of Mahomes’ third child, Golden Raye, who was born during Kansas City’s bye week after clinching the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage in the AFC.

Mahomes threw for 177 yards and a touchdown in a 23-14 win over the Houston Texans in last week’s divisional-round matchup. The 29-year-old QB has been heled to two or fewer touchdown passes in eight of his last 10 playoff starts and he’s thrown for 300 or more yards in two of his last eight postseason appearances.
