The Boston Red Sox remain linked to Alex Bregman, as they have for most of the offseason. His market isn’t exactly red-hot, but interest is growing as Boston stays put.

Earlier reports Thursday left the off-chance of Bregman heading back to the Houston Astros as a possibility. The Athletic’s Chandler Rome followed up that report on where the reigning American League West champions stand in the race for the star infielder.

“The team’s longstanding offer to Bregman remains on the table, one source said on Thursday afternoon, but it’s unclear if the Astros will budge from the reported six years and $156 million it contained,” Rome wrote Thursday.

Rome added that factors such as the first luxury tax threshold and the fact that the Astros haven’t handed out a $100 million deal under owner Jim Crane. The reported offer might just be the best one Bregman gets with six years.

Bregman or a trade for St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado would finally fulfill the right-handed bat void the Red Sox spent the winter looking for. They need to be aggressive to fulfill that need before spring training begins in under a month.
