UPDATE NEWS: 49ers sign former Rams safety to a Reserve/Future contract

Quindell Johnson was an undrafted free agent out of Memphis in 2023. He signed with the Rams and was most recently on Los Angeles’s practice squad

The San Francisco 49ers had at least five safeties play over 50 snaps this past season. Coming into the year, Talanoa Hufanga was supposed to start alongside Ji’Ayir Brown, while rookie Malik Mustapha ended up easing himself in and getting acclimated to the NFL.

Hufanga was recovering from a serious injury and played only 308 snaps in seven games this past season. Mustapha looks like a potential star, while Brown led the position in snaps.

Brown and George Odum are under contract for two more seasons, but Hufanga is an unrestricted free agent this offseason. Roster turnover is inevitable year over year. The 49ers don’t have a safety on the practice squad. That changed Tuesday afternoon when the team announced they signed Quindell Johnson to a Reserve/Future contract.

Johnson, who turned 25 in November, was an undrafted free agent from the University of Memphis. He signed with the Los Angeles Rams out of college. In 2023, Johnson appeared in three games with the Chicago Bears. After being released from Chicago’s practice squad before the beginning of this past year, Johnson signed with the Rams practice squad on September 18. He was with the Rams for the entirety of 2024.

Johnson appeared in more games on various special teams units with Chicago in 2023. When he did play on defense, the majority of the snaps he took were at free safety.
