Yankees Could Trade for $100 Million Versatile Infielder From Angels

The New York Yankees are still looking to add to their infield with time running out before spring training begins. Alex Bregman still remains unsigned, but he is reportedly eyeing up the Boston Red Sox as his preferred landing spot. However, the Yankees could pivot to another infielder from the American League West division.

Luis Rengifo has blossomed over the last three seasons with the Los Angeles Angels after having a slow start to his career. The Venezuelan infielder hit .300 last season in 283 at bats with six home runs and 30 RBI. He hit .264 in 2022 and 2023 with 16-17 home runs and just over 50 RBI both years. Defensively, Rengifo is athletic and shows off his versatility by playing both positions on the left side of infield along with second base. Seeing as second and third base are the two areas where the Yankees need an upgrade, it’s a dream come true for them. Here is what a potential trade could look like:

New York Yankees acquire: INF Luis Rengifo Los Angeles Angels acquire: LHP Brock Selvidge (Yankees No. 7 prospect), INF Jorbit Vivas (Yankees No. 17 prospect), RHP Yoendrys Gómez (Yankees No. 20 prospect) This deal would go through under the presumption that the Yankees would extend Rengifo and not let him walk in free agency. As a result, the package the Angels receive is larger than usual for someone in their final year of arbitration. For the Angels, Selvidge and Gómez are a pair of arms for Triple-A, with the latter potentially in line to make his Angels debut later in the 2025 season. Vivas would also report to Triple-A as an infielder who could reach the big leagues by season’s end.

As for the Yankees, they would receive a versatile infielder who can put the ball in play and lock him down for several years. Right now, Rengifo’s market value is $15 million per year, a number the Yankees certainly could afford.
