MLB Rumors: Popular Red Sox Target Nearing Free Agency Decision

The Boston Red Sox could soon see one of their offseason targets come off the board.

Tanner Scott is weighing “several multi-year offers” and may choose his team by this weekend, according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network. The Chicago Cubs are among his top suitors, per the report.

Scott, 30, is among baseball’s best relievers, combining for a 2.03 ERA across the last two seasons with the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres. Scott earned his first All-Star nod in 2024, and is expected to parlay his successes into a three- or four-year contract with an average annual salary that could approach $20 million.

Chicago is interested, per Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic, though that salary might be too rich for their blood. Boston could very well be in the same boat.

“We’ve been actively engaged in conversations, we’ll continue to do that and feel like there’s an opportunity to add to the bullpen,” Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said last weekend.
