The Tennessee Titans cast a wide net while searching for their next general manager after firing Ran Carthon early last week. Owner Amy Adams Strunk and president of football operations Chad Brinker identified 10 candidates, who interviewed for the job virtually. Brinker and Co. then narrowed the list down to six finalists, who interviewed for the job in Nashville in recent days.
It now appears the Titans have come to a decision. They are hiring former Kansas City Chiefs assistant general manager Mike Borgonzi to be their new GM, according to a report by Jordan Schultz. Adam Schefter reports contract details are still being ironed out, but Borgonzi will be Tennessee’s new GM.
Ironically enough, Borgonzi was the first revealed candidate of 10. He was also garnering interest from the New York Jets, having interviewed for their GM vacancy as well.
Borgonzi represents a home-run hire for the Titans
Borgonzi has long received outside interest while helping Chiefs GM Brett Veach build a three-time (soon-to-be-four?) Super Bowl-winning dynasty in Kansas City. Borgonzi had worked for the Chiefs since 2009 and had been in his role as assistant GM since 2021. He previously gained consideration for the Commanders’ gig last offseason before Washington ultimately decided to hire another candidate.
“Long-time coming—one of the hardest-working guys in the business,” Veach told Albert Breer via text. “Tennessee made the right choice.”
When firing Carthon, the Titans positioned Brinker as de-facto decision maker on all football-related matters. Brinker oversaw the process of hiring a new GM, and was said to be searching for a candidate that understands how to build a roster through the draft. Borgonzi fits the bill, having helped Veach string together a dynasty through the draft, with superstar players like Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Chris Jones, Trey Smith, Creed Humphrey, and Isaiah McDuffie, among others, all being homegrown talents.
In Tennessee, Borgonzi will inherit the No. 1 overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft. Together, he and Brinker have a sizable decision to make regarding that pick. They could draft a new quarterback, with Miami’s Cam Ward garnering comparisons to franchise legend Steve McNair, according to some scouts around the league.
Borgonzi is apparently wasting no time reshaping Tennessee’s front office. Former Las Vegas Raiders GM Dave Ziegler may also be joining the front office, according to Breer. Ziegler would add another experienced mind to the new regime.
Tennessee’s roster is in rough shape. Together, Borgonzi and Brinker will collaborate on repairing it. Borgonzi is an outstanding hire for a Titans organization that desperately needs to start accumulating homegrown talent.
