The New York Mets are pivoting from Pete Alonso, accepting he will sign elsewhere, according to SNY’s Andy Martino. They could look to replace him with Toronto Blue Jays superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
During an appearance on Abriendo Sports, Guerrero said he is willing to negotiate an extension with the Blue Jays until the first full day of spring training. As spring training approaches, Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer proposed this trade that would replace Alonso with Guerrero:
- Mets receive: first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
- Blue Jays receive: right-handed pitcher Brandon Sproat (No. 40 overall prospect)
Only getting one prospect back from the Mets seems like an underwhelming return for the Blue Jays. However, Sproat is one of the best prospects in baseball. He is the Mets’ top prospect and on the MLB Pipeline’s Top 100.
“In exchange for one year of Guerrero, the Blue Jays would get at least six years of Sproat,” wrote Rymer. “The 24-year-old has risen fast since the Mets chose him in the second round in 2023. With three plus pitches in his fastball, slider and changeup, he profiles as a potential No. 2 starter.”
Guerrero would be an ideal replacement if Alonso leaves Queens. He is a four-time All-Star, two-time Silver Slugger and Gold Glover. It would allow the Mets to keep Mark Vientos at third base. However, Steve Cohen and the Mets would have to feel confident in their ability to bring Guerrero back in free agency.
The Blue Jays are “actively negotiating” an extension with Guerrero, according to Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith. However, they may start seriously entertaining offers for the superstar if a deal does not materialize soon.
