Yankees slugger shockingly predicted to land $60 million deal with Phillies | Sporting News

Alex Verdugo’s lone season with the New York Yankees didn’t go quite as planned.

Despite his strong fit in the clubhouse and above-average defense, the 29-year-old spent his only season in pinstripes struggling mightily at the plate.

During a contract year, that’s typically never a good sign, and reports are that Verdugo is “staring at” the decision to settle for a one-year deal.

However, a prediction from Drew VonScio of Newsweek surprisingly takes a counter view — believing the left-handed slugger could land a four-year, $60 million with the Philadelphia Phillies.

“Verdugo is expected to sign a four-year deal worth $60.8 million. This comes out to $15.2 million per year for the outfielder who will turn 29 years old in May. He would be a reasonable option for the Phillies to help contend in the National League East,” VonScio wrote.

After seeing what the market has looked like this offseason, it’s difficult to imagine Verdugo getting that type of deal in both length and total amount.

Coming off the worst season of his career since becoming a regular player, Verdugo slashed .233/.291/.356 with 13 home runs, 61 RBI and an 83 OPS+.

Verdugo is talented enough to land a contract as a bounce-back candidate, but it would be a surprise if it amounted to a long-term deal.
