Yankees urged to offer $26 million to Alex Bregman after shocking Cubs news | Sporting News

The New York Yankees could still be in the market for an infielder, and Alex Bregman is still available. Although the Yankees seemed to be priced out of Bregman’s market, the Chicago Cubs may have just opened the door.

670 the Score’s Bruce Levine revealed that the Cubs have spoken to Bregman about a short-term deal with opt-outs. If Bregman is open to such a deal, the Yankees could have a chance. FanSided’s Adam Weinrib suggested that the Yankees should offer Bregman a short-term deal to bring him to the Bronx.

“Get rid of Stroman’s cash (or most of it), offer Bregman the $26 million AAV he sought from the Astros on a three-year deal with an opt out after Year 1, and … profit,” questioned Weinrib. “Live in the best of both worlds? Who says no?”

Bregman would take over at third base for the Yankees, allowing Jazz Chisholm Jr. to play second base. He is a two-time All-Star, Gold Glover, Silver Slugger and World Series champion. Last season he had a .768 OPS in 145 games. Bregman has long tormented the Yankees in the postseason. Could he be open to joining the other side?

“Would the former shortstop who wears No. 2 in honor of a certain Yankee be willing to take a shorter-term plunge in the Bronx,” questioned Weinrib. “It sounds more appealing than doing so in Chicago.”

The Yankees never seemed like they were in on Bregman who was seeking a long-term deal. However, as spring training approaches and Bregman remains unsigned he could be interested in a deal similar to the ones Cody Bellinger and Matt Chapman signed last offseason.
