Packers fans are more optimistic about Wild Card matchup with Eagles than most NFL fans

The Green Bay Packers head into Sunday’s Wild Card game as an underdog, as one would expect. They enter the playoffs as the 7th seed in the NFC, they face the 2nd-seeded Philadelphia Eagles — who beat them back in week one — and they have been scuffling a bit in the last few weeks. And then there’s that pesky fact that the Packers are 0-5 this season against the NFC’s three teams with 13 or more wins.

Therefore, it’s no surprise that Philly is favored in this game, but they’re not actually favored by all that much. Last year, the Packers were seven-point underdogs heading into the same 7-2 matchup in Dallas. Green Bay pulled off the upset in that game, and there’s certainly a chance that they do so again this Sunday.

But how good are those chances? It depends on who you ask.

Packers fans find themselves about as optimistic as the sportsbooks about the Packers’ odds of winning this game outright, but much more optimistic than other fans across the NFL. The Packers’ current moneyline odds on FanDuel are +198, which gives an implied win probability of just over 33%. However, APC’s Reacts surveys this week find that Packers fans are predicting a Green Bay victory at a slightly higher rate of 37%.

Here are the results of our surveys on the results of Sunday’s game:

This survey breakdown also means that 58% of Packers fans who responded think that Green Bay will at least cover the 4.5-point spread this weekend. That is a much higher number than the rate at which NFL fans as a whole expect the Packers to cover. Those results came in at only 28%, against 72% of football fans overall going with the Eagles to cover.

The other big number to keep in mind from a sportsbook perspective is the total, which is currently set at 45.5. Given that the previous meeting between these two teams was a 34-29 game — a total of 63 points scored — it’s tempting to pick the over. But this season, the Packers are a bit unpredictable, with 8 games going over the total, 8 going under, and one hitting the total spot-on.

In fact, despite the team scoring 30 points or more in five straight games from weeks 12-16, the over was just 2-3 thanks in large part to the Packers’ defense playing better and keeping four of those opponents to 17 points or fewer.

With the Eagles also possessing an excellent defense, it’s entirely possible that this week’s game could be a bit more of a defensive slugfest than the first meeting was. Still, a slight majority of Packers fans are picking the over, with 56% saying there will be at least 46 points scored between the two teams.
