UPDATE: Brewers Poised for Defensive Dominance Despite Shutout in Top Awards

If you’re looking for a comprehensive gauge of defensive prowess in baseball, the Fielding Bible Awards might just be the golden standard over the old guard of Gold Gloves.

These awards, though newer, are determined by a panel of expert evaluators well-versed in defensive metrics, rather than the more arbitrary system seen with Gold Gloves. With a single award per position for all of MLB, the competition is fierce and recognition is deeply meaningful.

While no Brewers player clinched a Fielding Bible Award in 2024, there’s still a silver lining for the Milwaukee faithful tucked within the voting results published by Sports Info Solutions.

First off, at second base, Brice Turang racked up an impressive 141 voting points, trailing just behind Cleveland’s defensive dynamo, Andrés Giménez, who notched 156.

Though Turang’s glove work was arguably on par, Giménez’s superior arm strength and ability to turn those crucial double plays nudged him to the top.

Finishing second to Giménez is no small feat and reinforces Turang’s status as a top-tier defender.

Over at third base, Joey Ortiz made waves with his seamless shift to the hot corner, earning him a commendable third-place finish.

San Francisco’s Matt Chapman, a perennial force, typically took the top spot—falling a single vote short of a unanimous win.

Ortiz might find himself moving over to shortstop next season with Willy Adames likely departing, and Milwaukee could bolster their defense even further by acquiring Ryan McMahon, setting up an infield that could redefine elite defense.

In center, Blake Perkins perhaps deserved more recognition. His limited playtime and stiff competition left him outside the top ten.

Yet, Sal Frelick shone brightly in right field, finishing second only to Boston’s Wilyer Abreu.

Other mentions for the Brewers came through William Contreras, who is steadily mastering the art of catching with some solid down-ballot votes; and Jackson Chourio, whose raw talent and athleticism were evident during his stint in left field.

Looking ahead, Milwaukee’s defense will be central to their pursuit of a third consecutive NL Central title in 2025.

While the spotlight might not always translate into Gold Glove hardware, the consistent excellence shown in the Fielding Bible Award votes underscores the defensive acumen already present—and still brimming with potential—for the Brewers next season.
