Viral statistic showcases how one Braves Hall of Famer holds an unbreakable record

When baseball fans think of unbreakable records they often begin with Cal Ripken’s ironman streak, or Cy Young’s 500 plus wins as a pitcher. Perhaps they even start with the late great Rickey Henderson’s 1,406 stolen bases. But what if we told you an Atlanta Braves Hall of Famer may hold the most unbreakable record in baseball?

We’re speaking, of course, of Bobby Cox’s MLB record for career ejections as a manager. His 162 ejections tower over every other skipper in baseball’s history. Recently, a frankly amazing tweet pointed out the ejection totals for active MLB managers and after looking at the list, Cox’s record feels as safe as ever.

Can any active manager catch Bobby Cox’s record for ejections?

Nowadays managers simply don’t get the opportunity to get ejected as much as they did in Cox’s managing days. In today’s baseball, arguing balls and strikes is grounds for an immediate ejection and in a lot of cases fined. As a result, managers have drastically cut back on voicing their frustration with the home plate umpire overall to keep themselves in the dugout.

Another factor here is that instant replay has eliminated most of the arguments over clear misses on safe/out calls on the bases (or at least taken the heat off the field umpires when replay screws up). Finally, the self-policing of plunking opposing hitters as a form of retaliation isn’t rooted in baseball as heavily as it once was. This means it’s not often we get fireworks between opposing teams, and managers don’t have to shield their players as much as they used to.

When you take all of those reasons into account you can then see why the active list for managerial ejections shouldn’t strike fear into Bobby Cox in regards to his ejection record. Pretty much no one is creeping up on the beloved Braves skipper. Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy leads active managers with 86 ejections and that is spread across 26 managerial seasons. The Atlanta Braves current manager, Brian Snitker ranks eighth on this list with just 20 career ejections.

However, one man may have a chance should he have the longeivity needed to chase down Bobby Cox. New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone has had his fair share of viral ejections. Unsurprisingly, Boone doesn’t just have the quality…he has the quantity. With his current total of 39 ejections in just seven seasons as Yankees manager, Boone has an ejection rate lower than Cox’s which sits at one ejection every 27.8 games.

Today’s baseball offers much more celebration theatrics rather than managerial outbursts taking place on the diamond. It’s part of the reason why we’re confident Cox’s full-season worth of ejections is a record that can stand the rest of time. That is if Aaron Boone isn’t managing long enough to change the narrative around that conversation.
