MLB Rumors: Former Red Sox Southpaw Inks Deal With White Sox

The Chicago White Sox stuck with their approach of recruiting former Boston Red Sox players as Martín Pérez joined Bobby Dalbec.

Pérez signed a one-year deal with the White Sox, according to FanSided’s Robert Murray, worth $5 million and pending a physical. The 33-year-old went 5-6 with a 4.53 ERA across 26 starts for the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Diego Padres — Pérez was traded from Pittsburgh to San Diego ahead of the MLB trade deadline.

The left-handed veteran underwent a rocky campaign as Pérez suffered a left groin strain in late May and spent a month in recovery. Pérez also didn’t get off on the right foot on the mound either, going 2-5 with a 5.20 ERA through 16 starts with the Pirates before Pittsburgh’s front office elected to cut ties and move on from the 13-year veteran.

Pérez did undergo a slight upswing with the Padres, going 3-1 with a 3.46 ERA during his final 10 starts of the year. It wasn’t enough for Pérez to flip the trajectory of his free agency market value, but enough for the White Sox to welcome him to Chicago amid the team’s rebuild and following its horrendous 121-loss run in 2024.

It’s likely Pérez will get plenty of opportunities to take the mound for the White Sox, who aren’t expected to rebound significantly in 2025 and play meaningful baseball. Chicago has been clearing out its locker room, departing from infielder Yoán Moncada and trading ace pitcher Garrett Crochet to the Red Sox for four prospects — Kyle Teel, Braden Montgomery, Chase Meidroth and Wikelman Gonzalez.

Pérez is three seasons removed from his first and only All-Star Game selection.
