The Baltimore Orioles are stepping into the offseason spotlight with some hefty questions that need answering, particularly after another year of exiting the playoffs sans a single game victory.

The Wild Card round concluded with the Orioles being swept aside by the Kansas City Royals.

They couldn’t replicate their remarkable 101-win season from 2023, managing 91 wins this year and clawing their way into the postseason, only to face the same sweeping fate in October.

As they prepare to tackle free agency, the Orioles have two glaring issues hanging in the air: the futures of Anthony Santander and Corbin Burnes. Baltimore would undoubtedly love to retain both.

However, the harsh realities of budget constraints might make that dream a stretch, necessitating prioritization – with Burnes being the clear frontrunner.

While Santander’s recent career-high season is noteworthy, Burnes’ value as a proven ace at the top of the rotation is something the Orioles can’t afford to ignore.

In the event that Baltimore cannot hold onto Santander, there are potential landing spots where his departure might particularly sting. One speculative destination is the Toronto Blue Jays.

If some of the bigger names on the open market remain elusive to them, Santander might fit their power-hitting needs perfectly.

Matt Johnson from SportsNaut highlighted this potential scenario, pointing out that while the Blue Jays would love marquee names like Juan Soto or Alex Bregman, the likelihood and cost might deter such acquisitions, opening the door to Santander.

In 2024, Santander played in 155 games – a career high. He earned his first All-Star nod while posting career bests with 44 home runs and 102 RBIs.

Though his defensive contributions aren’t as pronounced, his power at the plate is undeniable. With 105 home runs over the past three years, any team in need of power would likely take a keen interest.

While Baltimore’s desire to bring Santander back is palpable, should that not materialize, the Blue Jays loom as a plausible suitor ready to enhance their slugging potential by welcoming his bat into their lineup.

The offseason promises to be a critical juncture for the Orioles, and how they navigate these roster decisions will shape their path forward.
