Latest MLB power rankings are a reminder of how good the Phillies really are

The baseball offseason is a test for all MLB clubs to better themselves for the upcoming season. The Philadelphia Phillies find themselves in a unique position of uncertainty while still holding to their strong veteran leadership. The Phillies have doubled down and hold the belief that their current roster can lead them to victory.

The Phillies’ lack of a franchise-altering move has led to frustration among fans, with the payroll restrictions being the driving force in the decision-making. The moves made have been cheaper substitutes with a high upside, assuming they work out.

Although the new players may not be the most prolific names available, they plugged the holes needed to adjust for next season. The Phillies are in a great position to run it back in 2025 and the latest MLB power rankings from ESPN suggest just that.

The Phillies are still a top club in the sport and now have an even better understanding that nothing is a guarantee. The shine of a division title only lasted as long as that final out of last year’s Division Series loss to the New York Mets.

The National League is no walk in the park as top contenders refuse to stay immobile in free agency, including the reigning champion Los Angeles Dodgers. Any dream of signing Juan Soto was swept away by the checkbook of Mets owner Steve Cohen. Although a lighter Phillies offseason has been the headline, the thump of the lineup and overpowering pitching staff have them in the upper echelon of teams.

Here’s how the Phillies stack up in the first ESPN MLB power rankings of 2025:

Rank Team
1 Dodgers
2 Phillies
3 Yankees
4 Mets
5 Braves

The dread of another October stall is far from a winning feeling, but if we are being honest, the Phillies are still in a great position to compete for a title. Much of the core is still intact and is still playing at peak level. First baseman Bryce Harper, coming into his age 32 season, is the engine of the Phillies’ offense and is an imposing force any time he steps into the batter’s box.

The rest of the lineup follows suit with stars such as shortstop Trea Turner, designated hitter Kyle Schwarber and outfielder Nick Castellanos. The team had major scuffles in the second half last season but still finished tied for fourth place with a .750 team OPS. The lineup that scored the third most runs in the NL (784) is still an elite club coming off winning a division crown.

The Phillies have depth, which is more than most teams can say. Their pitching staff is among the best in baseball, and they just recently added another potential star in Jesús Luzardo from the Miami Marlins. A lack of depth will keep even the best teams from hoisting the trophy at the end of the season. The Phillies may not be perfect in every way, but they are built to win a title and hopefully will soon.
