Patriots Rumors: This Change Expected If Jerod Mayo Retained

Jerod Mayo didn’t look prepared for the responsibility to succeed Bill Belichick, leaving Patriots owner Robert Kraft with a tough decision.

Patriots Rumors: Bill Belichick Expected To Poach Coaching Staff

Kraft hand-picked Mayo to lead the New England to a new era. However, another down season had fans vocalizing a need for change. Players pushed back while defending their head coach as the league waited to see what would happen at One Patriot Place.

There’s been mixed reporting regarding Mayo’s job security. However, according to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, if the 38-year-old is retained, more veteran coaches are expected to be added to the staff.

That would hint that a coordinator change or two for the staff. Offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt is the popular choice to get fired despite public support from players, especially Drake Maye. However, defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington also didn’t do much to justify a return.

Josh McDaniels and Brian Dabboll are popular choices to lead the offense; the latter choice is assuming he gets fired by the New York Giants.

And there won’t be a shortage of options if there is more house clearing on the coaching staff. Jones added that Bill Belichick could poach coaches to add to his staff at North Carolina.

That would depend on whether or not Mayo’s job truly survives after Week 18.
