New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo wasn’t interested in finding any silver linings following a lopsided 40-7 defeat at the hands of the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday.
“What I told the players: Nothing good to take from the game,” Mayo said after the game.
New England has lost six straight contests, falling to 3-13 this season. The Patriots have also been outscored 94-45 in their past three games.
The Chargers opened Saturday’s matchup by scoring 17 straight points, while New England couldn’t get on the board until less than two minutes remained in the first half. Los Angeles entered halftime with a 20-7 advantage and didn’t look back, as the Patriots were held scoreless throughout the final two quarters.
New England was only able to muster 181 yards of offense, converting a mere two of 10 opportunities on third down. Mayo’s team also failed to convert all three of its fourth-down chances.
Rookie quarterback Drake Maye finished 12-of-22 for 117 yards and a touchdown, getting sacked four times. Maye briefly left the game to be evaluated for a head injury, but he was able to return.
Despite New England’s struggles throughout its inaugural season under Mayo, it doesn’t appear as though a head coaching change is incoming. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport reported on Saturday that the first-year coach is expected to be back in 2025 barring “some type of calamity” during the end of the 2024 season.
Expectations weren’t extremely high for the Patriots entering the year, as they wrapped up a 4-13 campaign in 2023 and selected Maye with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 draft.
There are some reasons for optimism moving forward, starting with the rookie signal-caller. Maye has thrown for 2,276 yards and 15 touchdowns compared to 10 interceptions in 11 starts.
Cornerback Christian Gonzalez, New England’s first-round pick in 2023, has also showed promise through his first two seasons in the league. Entering Saturday’s action, Gonzalez recorded 58 tackles and 11 passes defensed to go along with a pair of interceptions.
Mayo wasn’t focused on being optimistic after a blowout loss on Saturday, though.
