MLB Insider Links Red Sox To Pair Of Remaining Marquee Free Agents

The Boston Red Sox made two important pitching additions with Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler strengthening the rotation.

Boston could still greatly improve the roster this offseason and two major targets remain available. Could either make sense with the Red Sox?

Infielder Alex Bregman and starting pitcher Corbin Burnes are the biggest names left on the free-agent market. CBS Sports analyst and former MLB executive Jim Bowden kept Boston in the conversation for both players Friday evening.

“The Red Sox, Tigers and Blue Jays appear to be the best options for Alex Bregman,” Bowden posted to X Friday. “The Giants, Blue Jays (and) Red Sox (are the) best possibilities for Burnes.”

Between the two, Bregman seems infinitely more likely and reasonable to pursue. The addition of two starting pitchers already probably takes them out of serious running for Burnes, who marked the other marquee arm in addition to Max Fried, who signed a long-term deal with the New York Yankees.

Bregman’s market may be dwindling, and his fit still makes plenty of sense for the Red Sox. He’d instantly bring Boston needed right-handed pop in addition to championship pedigree and improved infield defense.

Real glances to 2025 are around the corner with New Year’s Eve approaching. Boston can still ignite fireworks to bolster the roster further before spring training.
